China's electric vehicle market is gearing up to welcome the JMEV 01, formerly known as the SC-01. This two-seater electric coupé, set to be manufactured by Jiangling Group New Energy starting April 15th, promises to deliver sports car performance at a surprisingly affordable price, estimated at under 300,000 yuan (approximately 41,350 USD).
Performance
The JMEV 01 does not disappoint in its technical specifications. Its dual-motor electric system delivers a combined output of 435 hp, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 3.9 seconds. The ternary lithium battery, supplied by CALB and centrally mounted, ensures a range of 520 km (Chinese homologation cycle).
The engineering team prioritized weight reduction, utilizing a tubular spaceframe chassis and push-rod suspension, resulting in a curb weight of just 1,365 kg – a remarkable feat for an electric vehicle.
Design
With dimensions of 4,106 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, and 1,170 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,503 mm, the JMEV 01 exhibits classic sports car proportions. The production model retains the prototype's aggressive styling, including sleek LED headlights, blacked-out C-pillars for a floating roof effect, and distinctive circular taillights.
Interior
The interior of the JMEV 01, which, like the exterior, appears to be inspired by the Alfa Romeo 4C, bucks the trend of omnipresent touchscreens, opting for traditional physical controls, including a manual handbrake – a rarity in modern electric vehicles.
The minimalist instrument panel features a rotary gear selector, and only essential driver assistance systems are included. Other less ergonomic controls, such as windshield wipers and hazard lights, have been placed on the ceiling.
About 01
Initially unveiled in September 2022 as the "Small Sports Car SC-01," the project, initially supported by Xiaomi, is now entering production under the JMEV brand, which had a brief partnership with Renault between 2019 and 2023.
The JMEV 01 promises to be an appealing proposition for electric sports car enthusiasts seeking a vehicle with thrilling performance at an accessible price. It remains to be seen whether this new model will meet expectations in the competitive Chinese market. Success there could lead to intentions to market the model internationally.
